Near the water’s edge, the Beach and Swim Center hosts a Junior Olympic-sized pool, a wading pool, a fitness room, an outdoor volleyball court, a beach area for swimming, and a pool deck overlooking the lake. The city maintains 10 parks, several of which have water access. Windjammer Park is home to the Carolinas Show Ski Team, which puts on free waterski shows throughout the summer. There is a system of walking trails winding through Tega Cay neighborhoods, linking parks together. Residents and visitors can also experience nature at the Living Memorial Gardens, a large public garden located in Tega Cay. The community hosts a number of annual events and festivals, including a Fall Festival and a popular Fourth of July Celebration. Tega Cay Golf Club is one of the best courses in the region, with 27 holes situated on more than 200 acres of beautiful land surrounding Lake Wylie.

 

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Tega Cay has three schools in the Fort Mill School District, and shares in the advances of this excellent school system. In fact, Fort Mill schools have been rated amongst the best in South Carolina. Additionally, there are 19 private schools within 10 miles of Tega Cay. There are several institutions of higher learning within reach for Tega Cay residents, including Clinton College, the University of South Carolina Upstate, Winthrop University, and the colleges and universities in Charlotte.

 

History

Tega Cay was originally a development, and not a city. The developer broke ground in 1970 on land formerly owned by Duke Power Company, and eventually built roads, a golf course, tennis courts, and a clubhouse. After houses were built and a guard gate was erected, residents moved into this Polynesian-themed community. However, in 1982, the developer filed bankruptcy, and the residents formed a city to protect their interests. In 2000, the city annexed several other neighborhoods, causing the community to double in population.
